This truly is the land of diversity and contrast with its rich farmlands, desert sand dunes and high, snow-capped mountains. It also has an abundance of oil production.

The Lincoln County War, although short-lived, brought cowboys and cattle ranchers, outlaws and the U.S. cavalry in a major engagement. It was in Lincoln, a well-preserved historic district where Billy the Kid is noted as having roamed the streets. But it was in Fort Sumner where Sheriff Pat Garrett tracked down and shot Billy the Kid on July14, 1881, ending the Kid's lawless career.
